It's time to get some all important experience in the business world, but where to apply? Which company will actually give you the chance to get some vital hands-on experience in your chosen career area and not just leave you staring at a blank wall all day or, even worse, secretly trying to eat a sandwich in silence in front of your computer because they "forgot" to give you a break? RateMyPlacement is here to rescue you from all of the above and more! Hi RateMyPlacement, thanks for giving us the opportunity to ask you a few questions. For anyone reading this who has never heard of you before, what does RateMyPlacement do? To make it a bit more challenging, try and explain it in 140 characters! Hosting reviews, jobs and advice, RateMyPlacement is the TripAdvisor for student placements, internships, vacation schemes and insights. Who came up with the concept behind RateMyPlacement and what was the inspiration? We (the three founders) were all on our year-long placement years and had 'mixed' experiences, so to speak.
After a particularly dull day on his placement, Ali – one of the Co-Founders – had a realisation that if there was a website where students could share their feedback about their placement, it would have been really useful in helping him decide where to apply to...and where to avoid!Ten months and many discussions later, the first iteration of the website was released to allow students to rate and review their work experiences. How many people now make up the RateMyPlacement team? From three founders in 2007, there are 41 people in the team these days, so the company’s grown a lot in that time. Most of the team’s members are in client service roles. This ensures that our products are engaging with the right audiences and that we're delivering results for our clients across RateMyPlacement and our other seven products, including the Top Undergraduate Employers guide, On-Campus Promotions and RateMyApprenticeship. Most of your users are students from which subject areas? Business is our most popular discipline and that covers many degree disciplines. Marketing is by far the most popular search term on the website, followed by banking and finance, law and engineering. We see that ratemyplacement.co.uk has been around since 2007, have you won any awards in that time? Being crowned 'Best Niche Job Board' at the online recruitment awards was a proud one for us to win in 2010, along with the £50,000 first prize we won in 2011 for being the London region winner for the inaugural Barclays 'Take One Small Step' awards. The celebration the night we won £50,000 was epic. Other than providing advice about placements and internships, does ratemyplacement.co.uk offer any other services? The peer-to-peer advice through our 36,000 company reviews drives students to the website. Alongside the reviews and advice, we have a market-leading job board that hosts all the available undergraduate opportunities for students to apply for across the UK. Do you feel work placements and internships are valuable? Of course! These days, graduating with just a degree isn't enough in an increasingly competitive job market. Undertaking some form of work experience prior to graduating allows students to put all the theory they've learnt at university into practice, and allows students to demonstrate and develop their skills. Do you agree that students being taken advantage of/being unfairly treated whilst undertaking internships or work placements is a problem? As with any job, that is a problem. We set up RateMyPlacement to help better educate students while they were researching and applying for roles, while the reviews also act as a feedback method for companies. Hosting anonymous feedback ensures companies are being monitored and rated on their performance, directly impacting how they treat their current and future intakes. Have you received any particularly funny or horrifying reviews from users of the site? A few! But none that are set live...we moderate all reviews and comments, therefore anything libellous, defamatory or 'horrifying' doesn't get set live and is privately shared with the company. Any plans to go international or would you prefer to stay in the UK for now? We've researched the USA as internships are huge there, however we're expanding the business through introducing an increasing range of different, complimentary products to the UK student recruitment market for the time being...and that's keeping us busy enough! Thank you RateMyPlacement and best of luck for the future :).
