Moving abroad can be a stressful time, saying goodbye to friends and loved ones is hard enough, never mind having to find accommodation in a country you've perhaps never been to or whose language you might not speak particularly well. Before my Erasmus year abroad, I remember one of my biggest fears was not being able to find somewhere to live, or ending up in the middle of nowhere, not knowing who I'd be living with! Available in various cities throughout the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany and even the USA, Spanish startup Beroomers has come up with the magical formula for students and young workers searching for accommodation abroad. Could you please tell us a little about the co-founders' training? Hi! Thanks for interviewing us and for your interest in Beroomers. We are the co-founders of this accommodation platform for students and young workers: Guillermo Ruiz, Sunil. Mahtani and Antonio Huerta. Guillermo has a degree in Business Administration, Master in Creation and Acceleration of Start Ups and Master in Sales Management from the ESIC Valencia. On the other hand, Sunil is an Industrial Engineer with a Masters in Innovation and Development of Business Projects. Finally, Antonio is a Computer Engineer, with experience in Technological Consultancy and entrepreneurship in several companies. What is Beroomers exactly? Beroomers is an online platform for students and young professionals, whose aim is to make the process of finding accommodation easier. One of the main advantages we offer is that students can book online and before arriving at their destination city. Plus, he/she can choose his/her ideal student home in a shared flat or a student hall, rent a whole apartment or live with a host family. Booking is 100% safe, due to the payment system and the verification of accommodation listed. How and when did the idea of starting this company arise? The idea was conceived some years ago, from our own experiences of studying abroad. Back then, we faced the challenge of finding accommodation, and we experienced its difficulties, at a time when students travelled before starting their studies to find a place where to live, or searched on websites with no online booking. This experience was materialized in 2013 with Beroomers. We are now internationally present in more than 50 cities, and we are continuing to grow. Why did you decide to start your own company? In our case, we were working for many years as employees, and were motivated by the idea of putting this experience into practice by developing our own company. How is it funded? We currently have the financial support of Business Angels, as well as professional investors who believe in our project. We have also received public funding. What is Beroomers’ business model? Beroomers is a marketplace, which connects students and young professionals looking for accommodation with those landlords providing the flats, rooms or student halls listed on our website. All of this is carried out from an international perspective. Can you tell us more about your team? The team is made up of more than 15 people, who work every day to offer a personalized service, both for students and landlords. We are a multinational and multilingual team, with experience living abroad, so we are well aware of the problems that students may have when moving abroad. How much time did it take you to start this project? In 2013, when Beroomers started, it took us about 3 months to get the first sale. Plus, in only 1 month’s time we had the first 35 rooms listed in Valencia. These are just a few figures about the origins of Beroomers, for which the business model pivoted in the first 3 weeks. How do you differ from your competitors? Beroomers does not only help students find accommodation. What sets us apart is that we make sure students have an unforgettable experience abroad. On our website, students can, before making a decision about booking, know more about who they will be living with. Our aim is to make finding the ideal roomies, or a host family that makes you feel at home, really easy. Plus, we help them individually to find accommodation according to their preferences and needs. If you are a student, just tell us where you would like to live, what your budget is, what other preferences you have...and we will do the rest! In your opinion, what is the key for business success? The key for business success would be the result of a formula, in which the ingredients would be: daily effort, the ability to adapt to changes, the ability to improve by keeping the user in mind and, of course, enthusiasm. What advice would you give to a young entrepreneur? To every young (or not so young) entrepreneur we would give them the following tips: First, to test the business idea as soon as possible, to know if it could be successful and to collect opinions about what could be improved. Secondly, to expand his/her training and to have a team that complements his/her own skills. And third, to enjoy each day of this stage. That is the most important thing! Thanks Beroomers and the best of luck for the future! :) If you're moving abroad, or are just interested in the concept behind Beroomer, you can visit the site here.
